On my first trip to Italy, I was determined to “blend in like a local.” Armed with a phrasebook and my best attempt at rolling r’s, I ordered what I thought was a simple cheese pizza in a small trattoria in Florence. The waiter gave me a curious smile, nodded politely, and disappeared into the kitchen. When the pizza arrived, I proudly took a bite only to realize I had accidentally asked for gorgonzola instead of mozzarella. The pungent blue cheese hit me like a surprise party I hadn’t signed up for. As I tried to act cool, the elderly couple at the next table burst into laughter, and soon the waiter joined in, kindly teaching me the difference. By the end of the meal, I had made three new friends, learned the importance of pronunciation, and discovered that travel is as much about laughing at your mistakes as it is about seeing famous landmarks.
Travel our world
Travel has the power to completely shift the way someone sees the world. Stepping into a new culture, hearing a different language, or tasting food you’ve never encountered before can break down assumptions and expand your understanding of what life can look like. It’s one thing to read about a place or watch it on a screen, but walking through its streets, meeting its people, and experiencing its rhythm firsthand creates empathy and appreciation in ways that can’t be replicated. Travel reminds us that our way of living is just one of many, and it often sparks gratitude for both the diversity we discover and the common humanity we share.
